The original play areas were crying out for a revamp when Auckland Kindergarten Association engaged Jill Rice to redesign them for Mt Eden Kindergarten. But the spacious, north-facing, sloping site with lovely views into the surrounding landscape had potential to become a wonderful terrace garden for children to explore. The design provides a series of attractive enclosed spaces for different uses by the children, separated by low retaining timber walls and planting, and linked by winding pathways and steps. As the gardens have become established, other areas within the planting have also become inhabited by the children who make the most of every available space.
