Design Brief

Creating a clean-lined pool environment next to a traditional residence was the challenge for designer Gudrun Fischer. The property’s owners particularly enjoy swimming and exercise. The existing rose garden was of little interest and therefore the perfect spot for a lap pool.

The 20m long pool is positioned beside rectangular structures – the house on one side and garage to the rear – so the design is also linear to create an immediate visual link. The water feature is positioned directly opposite the dining niche, instead of midway along the pool to give diners views straight across the swimming pool to the falling water.

The water feature’s ceramic tiles were chosen to match the tones of the bricks on the lower level of the house and draw the two together. The transparent balustrade ensures uninterrupted views and this safety fence incorporates a sliding gate opposite the steps. Operated by sensor, it saves space – with no need to allow extra room for a swinging leaf gate. A hinged gate at the spa end of the pool gives direct access to the lawn beyond. Plants along the garage wall are Schefflera arboricola, pruned as a narrow, clipped espalier up to the underside of the garage windows. The existing tall hedge is layered with silver-green Corokia Geenty’s Ghost and red Phormium Dazzler in front of it. LED lights under the waterfall, stair lights in the risers and up lights at the base of the retaining wall, as well as the pool’s underwater lights, illuminate this garden room at night.
