Design Brief

This garden project involved re-invigorating an established but tired garden containing several mature trees and palms.

In keeping with the repetitive curves used as a motif throughout both the Art & Crafts-style house and its original garden, Damian has used concrete and timber to good effect, formatting new elements in a manner that compliments and incorporates the existing curved masonry fences and retaining walls.

At the lower level, outside a home office, a small courtyard has been provided as an outdoor seating space and new curved concrete steps have been added, leading to the relocated front door.

At the rear of the property, a private garden opening out from the kitchen, dining and living area has undergone a radical renovation, involving the construction of a sweeping, curved-edge, hardwood deck over the original concrete patio. An extended wooden bench seat runs invitingly along one end of this restful open space. At the back of this garden, a large outdoor artwork by Desna Whaanga-Schollumprovides a striking focal point, with generous concrete bowl planters addingto the circular theme while also providingpractical opportunities for both feature and edible planting.
