The garden is designed to have a strong relationship with the Architectural character of the area. The brick walls built from brick salvaged from the Christchurch earthquake could have been remnants of a larger garden. The plantings focus on seasonality and texture as well as being predominantly productive or medicinal. As the house is separated from the garden by the gradient of the site, the garden is designed to be viewed from above and to lure the visitors down into the garden. The owners are lovers of old literature particularly Katherine Mansfield and so the garden too could belong to that time.
