Rangitoto College wished to develop a large and underused courtyard area into a memorable place featuring water and greenery, for quiet reflection and conversation, in complete contrast to the typically robust school landscape. The design references Rangitoto Island’s volcanic geology, and is also informed by what we perceive to be a real strength of the College: that within a structured school environment the individuality of the students is celebrated. Hence the water feature and planting are held within a strong geometric grid interrupted by large interestingly shaped boulders that form a river through the landscape connecting the different social spaces.
