Design Brief
This is the second garden that I have designed for my client Nathalie.
This modernist home was a dream for Nathalie when she purchased it, and she contacted me to design her garden.
I could see why she loved the house, and she understood how a well-designed garden will only enhance the property.
The Retro and modernist style of house with gorgeous clean lines and indoor-outdoor flow to pool area was stunning.
View-lines from windows were extremely important and I could see the potential in updating materials and designing in new structure.
An old, dated kidney shaped pool and yellow terracotta paving had to go! A mishmash of planting needed thinning and replanting, and there was a general lack of cohesion.
I immediately thought of the Californian Landscape Architect Thomas Church and his publication ‘Gardens are for People’ featuring a gorgeous kidney shaped pool and clean modernist design.
Starting with a redo of pool interior and all surrounds we opted for scala stone crazy paving from Eco outdoors, a gorgeous neutral tone that offered a brightness and more contemporary feel.
The brief included Incorporating a new spa pool and a featured sheer descent waterfall.
New rounded/ floated decking and steps, firepit area and layout to lawn, creates soft curved lines to help integrate with the curves of pool.
Pool fencing has been deleted. An internal alarm system serves instead.
The planting is sub-tropical and given there were some taller palms already in the garden, it made sense to carry this theme on in the design. Retro plants like Bird of paradise had to stay as they were perfect in this setting.
Many layers of new planting now create cohesion and balance.
